30 Day Free Trial Christianity � Day 1, Beholding Him! Behold Him and we shall be transformed into His image. Behold means to gaze upon, fix our eyes upon. This is not a casual glance. Not being an outside observer. Not looking at life, playing the game from the Grand Stand, or from the bleachers. This means getting up real close and getting your hands in it. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2Cor.3:18 We with unveiled faces, behold as in a mirror the glory of God, glory of the Lord are being transfigured/transformed into His image and likeness. We come into this transfiguration and experience just as our Lord Jesus was transfigured on the Holy Mount. We too are being transformed into the Lord�s image. By continuing to Behold Him, continue to behold His face, continuing to look upon His face. The glory that is on our Lord, the glory that is in His Word, gets in us and changes us from glory to glory. As we behold Him, He becomes dear to us, we learn to desire Him more than our own lives. He begins to become the meaning for our existence, we can not live without, we have an inward graving, hunger for our Lord, His presence in our worship, we have a deep hunger for His living Word. Indeed His Words become the very bread of life to us. We see and understand that He is greater and more excellent, so much more glorious than this life of ours in this world. His desire is to bring us closer to Himself. He says in His Word, draw near to God and He will draw near to you. He is the initiator of my love-life embrace with Himself. God�s desire is for us to know Him and to love Him, and to be transformed to be like Him. If we get close enough, to get to know Him and to understand Him, we will learn to Love Him. His love will begin to consume our lives, His love is like a continual flow of living water that brings refreshing and joy to your souls. I would always say to other people, if you knew me, you would love me. Because I am gentle and kind, I consider others above myself, I think of others more than I think of myself. (Not that I am perfect, but the nature of Christ is being formed in me to be like Him.) This is really not the real me, but is the Christ our Lord who lives in me and this is His life, His nature that is now living in me. I am learning to allow His life, His nature, His Word to operate in my life. I am learning to be drawn near to Him. I am beginning to understand His Word and am now learning to know and understand His ways and His nature. His ways are not always like our ways. Moses asked God to teach him the ways of God. As I continue to step closer to Him, At First it can be a little uncomfortable. Just like being in a crowded elevator, this closeness, this close encounter. You can�t wait until the doors open and you can get out. I remember after a time of fasting and praying to God, asking him to change my heart to reveal Himself, to make His Word real in my life. I began to hear the voice of God, the Words of the Bible were being brought to my mind and my soul in a refreshing way. Almost effortless, stream of living water, the Word was bubbling up from my spirit, by the Spirit of the Lord, He was giving me that living water. Just as the woman at the well asked, Lord, give me that living water. But after a while, I could hardly handle it. It began to be uncomfortable to my flesh. I realized now that my flesh wanted to be in control. My flesh wanted to be in control, directing my thinking. But as the days went by and I continued to return to the Well, where I tasted of that living water. He was gracious enough to continue to feed by the water of His Word. God through His love for us is bringing us closer to Himself, that when we are this close, we can begin to fell His very breathe. Just as John the beloved was so close to Jesus that he knew our Lord�s way and temperament. New His breath and heart beat. Our Lord wants to give us not only a heart after God. But He wants to share His very own heart with us. Our Lord wants to reveal to us the passion that He has for our lives. This passion, this love that He has for us. He wants us to really know Him, to love Him, to be filled with the very heart of God. Let His love and passion transform your live and you will never be the same. You will never want to go back. I want to see the heart of God to be imparted into the lives of His people today.     Most new coaches (and even some experienced ones) have a strong tendency to want to help the client solve their problem(s) by showing/telling them the answer. The better method is to let the client discover the answer. And the most effective method for the client to discover the answer is to ask the right questions.

    Tony Stoltzfus and created a very helpful guide with his Coaching Questions. The first section of the book covers the groundwork. Why ask? He gives you five great reasons why asking is so important and effective.
    1. The answers lie within the person being coached.
    2. Asking creates buy-in
    3. Asking empowers - it gives the client confidence and encourages them
    4. Asking develops leadership
    5. And it creates authenticity

    He then moves to the top ten asking mistakes. We tend to ask closed end questions, we lead the client or we ask rambling questions. There is lots of additional very helpful information in the first section of the book.

    In section II, he goes over the coaching process which is a mini course in effective coaching. He spends time on the different conversation models, the coaching funnel, the coaching agenda and the life wheel assessment. Again he covers lots of additional material in this section.

    In section III, he covers life coaching and destiny discovery. Here the question are designed for the client to get a clear picture of who they are, what motivates them, their dreams and desires, the obstacles holding them back.

    Section IV is coaching in action, creating a better life today. Again the coaching is built around powerful and probing questions. Section V is about advanced asking skills. In section VI he covers the different coaching niches.

    There are question presented in each section. The questions are powerful and well organized. They are not meant to be asked mechanically, but used as a reference prior to a coaching session.

    There are plenty of sidebars in the margins of the book. They fall into three categories: applications, hints & tips and for more.

    If you follow the information in this book you will bring much more structure to your coaching sessions. More structure will bring more effectiveness. Follow his advice and guidance and you will become a better coach.

    In a time when winning teams tend to be a collection of criminals and prima donna's, it's refreshing to read a book about a champion both "on and off the court." In this novel Wooden shares memories from his days at UCLA as well as general thoughts on life outside of basketball. This one will stay in my library forever and be read repeatedly.     I'm a football fan but more of the college game than the professional game. Since Tony Dungy's prominence has been built within the NFL, I knew very little about him. I knew that he won a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts a few years ago. I knew that he is a public (but not obnoxious) Christian. And I knew that he is very well-respected in the football world and also within the Christian world. This book, his first, filled in many of the gaps and helped me to understand Tony Dungyt.

    I'll begin by stating that I don't think that "Quiet Strength" is a great book. But it is very clear to me that Tony Dungy is a truly great man. And this impression comes from this book, not because he boasted and bragged about his many triumphs, but because his genuine humility oozes out of every chapter. He was honest about his personal struggles and disappointments, like the death of his son or the hurtful irony that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl the year after he was fired. He was open about his mistakes, like some personnel decisions that he made which didn't work well and some off-hand controversial comments that he made which created a public stir. But while maintaining transparency, his critiques were generally pointed inward, whereas he was extremely gracious to the countless coaches and players who popped up in the stories of his life. Unlike most sports autobiographies, this one was not utilized as an opportunity to lambast those who hurt him. In fact, one gets the sense that Tony Dungy managed to navigate several decades in the NFL without making any genuine enemies. What a testament to his impeccable character and winsome personality!

    And providing the backdrop and reason for his integrity and warmth, Dungy was clear to explain throughout the book that his deep Christian faith informs every aspect of his life, professionally and personally. And he is unapologetic about his faith commitments, without being overbearing or obnoxious. The tone and spirit with which he speaks about his relationship with Jesus reflects Dungy's gracious spirit.

    Having appreciated Dungy's humility and spiritual authenticity, the final primary asset of "Quiet Strength" is the smattering of leadership nuggets throughout his many stories. Through the example of other coaches like Chuck Noll and informed by his Christian worldview, Dungy has developed a particular philosophy to coaching and leadership that he explained at some length throughout the book. This philosophy boiled down to a handful of pithy statements and ideas, such as "Do what we do, without explanation or excuse," that were repeated frequently. He was dogmatically committed to the notion that success did not have to come at the expense of a meaningful family life. And it did not have to come from a bombastic style of yelling and intimidation. To Dungy, winning was not everything, and it was not the only thing. In fact, football was clearly a secondary priority in his life, and he led his teams and his staffs accordingly. Amazingly (and much to the encouragement to those of us who share Dungy's philosophies and ideals), he succeeded nonetheless.

    So, why do I think that "Quiet Strength" is not a great book? First and foremost, I just don't think that Dungy is a very good story-teller. Frankly, many of his reflections about seasons and games throughout his career were rather dry, even boring. And I'm a sports fan, so I'm inclined to be interested by sports stories. But his story-telling just didn't have much life to it, a glaring weakness in an autobiography. I also found some of his spiritual reflections and leadership lessons to be overly simplistic. I realize that he's not writing for an intellectual audience, and I do not question the authenticity and legitimacy of his spiritual commitments and leadership wisdom. But I felt as if he sometimes offered insight that was simply too generic to actually connect with the complex realities of my life. Finally, having listened to the audiobook, read by Tony Dungy himself, it quickly became clear that Dungy does not have a future in audiobook reading. His voice was so gentle and relaxed that it made me a dangerous (sleepy) driver. Again, his gracious spirit would surely make for a wonderful father and an amazing mentor, but it doesn't work well for audiobook reading.

    Ultimately, I'm glad to have read "Quiet Strength" as an affirmation that integrity, healthy priorities, and spiritual commitments are not mutually exclusive with success. It was peppered with anecdotes and tidbits that may reemerge for me at some point in the future. And I finished the book with the highest esteem for Tony Dungy. However, I'm not sure that I walked away with any significant takeaways or new ideas that I can leverage in my future leadership.

    "Season Of Life" is a inspirational book that I highly recommend to any man, teen boy, parent, coach or teacher. It does not read like a text book at all. I really enjoyed following the High School Football team through the eyes of the author. Joe Erhmann is an example of a Godly man putting God's Word into practice. This book is all about teaching boys to become men. The author learns to improve his relationship with his father through watching Joe Erhmann model the basic strategic masculinity principles he learned from God's Word as he teaches them to the high school football team he coaches.




    		Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance

    "Uncommon" by Tony Dungy is an excellent title by a very successful coach not only by worldly standards, but more importantly, by spiritual standards.

    Among the points covered include:

    1. Character issues - honesty, integrity, courage, etc.
    2. Loving your family.
    3. Friendships - wisdom in selecting the right ones, mentoring, etc.
    4. Reaching your full potential - career, money, education, thoughts, goals.
    5. Your personal mission - substance over style, being over doing, following your dreams, balancing family/career/leisure/etc.
    6. Influence is more important than image - being a positive role model, respecting yourself and others.
    7. Faith - Dungy comes from an admittingly Christian background and does not hesitate to state his beliefs.

    While some folks may have problems with Dungy's faith and his "preaching", he is quick to offer praise and credit to God, his family, and others who have been positive influences in his life. This approach is a refreshing contrast to the self-self-self-self absorbed orientation of several of today's "self-help" titles that suggest that your fate is totally in your hands and that you are the master of your ship. What about when life's storms rock your ship, who are you going to depend on then? Look to Jesus Christ! There, that's my mini-sermon!

    A very readable title - I found myself completing the book in 2-3 sittings - the book's approximately 260 pages was a fast read.

    Highly recommended. Read, enjoy, and be challenged!

    As a coach of 5 years, I was very disappointed with this book... My advice is to read Maria Nemeth's "Mastering Life's Energies". The tools are pragmatic, simple, do not cross over into psychotherapizing the client, and get to the root of the problem in a direct, succinct manner. Free association and overuse of metaphors is not as powerful of a method for coaching as it is for therapy.
